Blog 3: My Favorite Cartoon

Hello everyone, today I will talk to you about my favorite cartoon of when I was a child.

I think my favorite cartoon was Totally Spies!, the series is about 3 best friends: Sam, Alex and Clover, they lived together in a mansion in Beverly Hills but the plot was that in addition to being students they also belonged to an organization where they had to fulfill missions (rescuing other people or seeking information) as secret agents.

In every episode the organization leader Jerry Lewis gave them a job and also gave them tools to solve the cases, my favorite tool was a laser lip and boots that helped them fly, it may sound super crazy but I used to think that was really cool. I think I remember that there were many villains but who I remember most is a man with a penguin appearance.

In addition, the lives of the girls outside the organization were shown, things like how was their high school life, their enmities and their relationships. Until today I continue to watch the series, it brings me many beautiful memories, especially when we saw the series with my sisters on Saturdays after doing our homework.

Blog 5: My Future Job

Hello everyone, today I will tell you about the work I would like to have in the future.

I think the work I would like to have is related to the restoration and conservation of heritage buildings, although I would also like to teach about the classical and heritage architecture of both Chile and the world. The only thing i'm sure is that I don't want to be locked in an architecture office designing buildings or drawing plans, because I don't like it.

Whenever I think about of my future work, It comes to mind traveling and knowing many heritage buildings and which have marked a before and after in the history of architecture, from The Coliseum to the Basilica of Saint Sophia and its mysterious dome. I am fascinated by the idea of understanding its functioning, its structure and working to keep these great constructions in place over time, and also to teach others about this topic.

All the courses outside the curriculum mesh I have taken and the specializations I chose are related to material and intangible heritage, it is a subject that I am really passionate about and would like to develop further in the future.

Blog 4: How Green are you?

Hi everyone!, today I will talk to you about recycling and the environment

I must really be honest and admit that I am not very aware of environmentally friendly practices, but I have taken some of the habits my family do have. They recycle and separate the trash according to its materiality, make compost and even reuse glass bottles and convert them into glasses and vases. I do the same practice, however, I do it because it's a habit in my family rather than doing it on my own (I know that I should change that mentality and I am working on this). Because I awake 2 hours from college, I use a bus, but to get around in the place where I live I prefer to walk.

I do not support an eco-organization, I do not really know whether recycling centers count as an organization, and I think that is due to the personal misinformation I have on the subject. I would like to be more conscious and a useful person in terms of recycling, to start showing more interest and being just as committed as other environmental activists. To reduce my carbon footprint I try to disconnect appliances that I don't use, avoiding eating meats, use cloth bags and avoid using plastic cutlery, dishes and glasses.

In our society, it is necessary to raise awarenes about the issue and the effects of pollution and greenhouse gases on the whole population.

Blog 2: Songs and Memories

Hello everyone, today I will talk about songs that bring memories to my mind.

I should start by saying (?)  that most of the songs that are transported to the past are from the same group as it is a band that I have heard for 7 years and with which I have grown and spent happy moments and also sad then it is difficult for me to choose one song, but I believe one of the songs that markd my lifestyle is Spine Breaker of BTS, I remember I was sad because I wanted a new cellphone but my parents couldn't buy, so I listened this song that literally speak of the children who break their parents' back to fulfill their whims, every time I hear it song I feel ashamed of myself but at the same time it was the time I began to become aware of many things.

And well, the second song I chose remember me of a sad moment in my life, but at the same time it is my greatest comfort, it is “Spring day” of the BTS, it is a song that came out a short time after I lost one of the most important people in my life, it been 4 years of that and whenever I hear this song is inevitable to feel nostalgia (?), but I feel conforted.

Blog 1: A Country I would like to visit

Hello everyone, today I will talk about the country that I would like to visit:

I would like to travel to Japan, I cannot explain why exactly, only that since I was a little girl I liked their culture, their language, food and especially the Japaneses temples, since they are unique and have a very interesting history related to deities and other spirits. I don't know much about the country, but if I know about Japaneses architects like a Fumihiko Maki and Toyo Ito and some urban myths like a Kuchisake Onna (the woman of the cut face), the legend of teke teke, among others.

I would love to travel to Japan and dedicate myself to tourism first, visit temples and open air museums, and go to Tokyo disneyland, also attend some festivities where they wear traditional clothing and sell lots of typical food from the country. In the future, I would like to live in Japan (only few years since I would also like to work in South Korea) and know about Japanese architecture, their wood work and the thoughs they have around architect work since there are five Japaneses winners of the pritzker prize.

Blog 9: Evaluation of blog experience

Hello everyone, today I will write the last blog of this English course.

It was a great experience, I had never done a blog writing about my personal tastes and talking about the career. It was also a lot of fun reading to my peers, I discovered things I didn't know (like some websites and some movies) and made online classes from home way more entertaining.

I think my writing skills have improved, every time I blogged I had less trouble writing the story and it took me less time. Although I still have a lot to improve in terms of writing, I think the fact that we worked through blogs made us develop this skill because it was a more dynamic learning method.

I do not know what I would like to include or what other topics I would use to write, because I think the teacher was very dynamic and talked about many different topics and used various tools like videos, games and blogs. The topics he made us write about were very general so we were very free to write about them.

Finally I want to thank Professor Benjy and my classmates, we were a small course, but I think we all tried to make it work and tried our best to get it through despite quarantine.

Thank you for everything, I hope we can read to each other again.

Blog 8: A subject you enjoyed studying this semester

Hello everyone, today I will tell you about my favorite subject this semester

UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage
of Humanity: "Bailes Chinos"
My favorite class is called Intangible Heritage, it is a transversal that is given in the FAU and is very interesting. During the class, the teacher presents a ppt (power point) and goes ask us questions about the subject, we also watch videos and read essays on intangible heritage and Chilean identity, it is a very fun class and where you learn a lot about the customs and traditions of the peoples who live in all regions of Chile.

Some of the topics discussed in the class are fairs and markets of Chile, traditional games, religious ceremonies that take place in the country and myths and legends. Now the professor made us create a work (atlas, story, comic) that talks about a topic and can be presented to children so that they learn more didactically about intangible heritage in Chile.

I think it's my favorite subject because I've learned a lot about the Chilean identity present in the country and about the different ways it has to manifest itself, plus the teacher always tries to get us to relate the content to our career and it is very interesting.

Blog 7: A Career-Related Website or an Expert in Your Field

Hello everyone, today I will talk about an expert in my field that I admire

"Cities have the ability to provide something for each of their inhabitants, only because, and only when, they are created for all"

The person I admire is Jane Jacobs, she was a journalist, socio-political activist and self-taught urban planner who was born in 1916 in the United States, who in the early 1960s led a movement that opposed the construction of a highway in New York since they led the destruction of neighborhoods and displacement of residents who had lived all their lives there. She studied and analyzed the streets because he believed that in this was the vision that people have of the city.

Some of his books are:

-The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1967)
-The Question of Separatism (1980)
-Cities and the Wealth of Nations (1985)

Jane Jacobs is the person I admire most mainly for her contributions to urban planning and for being an innate leader of a movement that sought to defend the human scale in the great American cities.

Blog 6: Favorite Movie

Freedom Writers (movie)
Hello everyone, today I will tell you about my favorite movie.

My all-time favorite film is "Freedom Writers" the film is based on the book "The Freedom Writers Diary" by professor Erin Gruwell.

The Freedom Writers
Diary (book)
The film begins in 1994, in Long Beach, California, Erin Gruwell is accepted to teach English to at-risk students at Woodrow Wilson High School, a school where racial tensions, segregation and abandonment toward students has increased. Throughout the film, Erin struggles to connect with her students, who see themselves as enemies among themselves because they belong to rival gangs. One day, Gruwell intercepts a racist drawing of one of his students and uses it to teach them about the holocaust (a subject that students had no knowledge of). After that, the teacher begins to earn the trust of her students and makes them talk about their personal experiences daily.

My favorite character is teacher Gruwell, as she never gives up with her students and always supports them (even after school), she managed to create a family with people who used to be rivals and that's admirable. I watched the film for the first time 2 years ago, I do not remember exactly how many times I have watched it but every time it's on tv I watch it or if I feel like seeing it, I look it up on the internet.

Blog 5: A photograph you like

Hello everyone, today I will tell you about the photograph that I like the most.

This photo was taken by my sister a few weeks ago (I don't remember exactly when). In it I'm with my BTS MOTS: 7 albums, I remember asking her to take a photo of me because I was so excited to get the albums from Korea, I had waited for them since February, but as a result of the pandemic I had to wait for months since customs and shipments had been closed. My albums were stopped for safety, but luckily they arrived.

That day was a chaos, I had to leave before my online classes to go to withdraw them, I had to do a very long line and I was very cold, however, I was very happy and excited to have my babies in my hands. Even though it's not the first time I buy an album, the excitement and happiness of opening it and seeing it's photo book, designs, cd and photocards is always the same.

Blog 4: Music

Hello everyone, today I will tell you about my favorite musical group.

My favorite group is BTS (Bangtan), which is a South Korean band composed of 7 members who debuted on June 13, 2013. Bangtan doesn't have an established music style, they are versatile artists who have worked with a mix of genres and styles like hip hop, R&B and EDM throughout their musical career.

They are my favorite artists because they are simply wonderful and talented people, they compose and write their songs which mostly speak about mental health issues, self-love, consumerism, among others, and in 7 years have helped many ARMY (fandom) throughout the world, have been able to break the language barrier and xenophobia paving the way for other Korean groups looking to enter the international market.

My favorite albums are Dark&wild, Love Yourself: tear and Map of the soul: 7, the latter is their most personal album as it tells the story of the 7 members and was released for its 7th anniversary.

My favorite genre is BTS, I don't like to be recognized as "kpop" because it's the term used for an idol manufacturing industry whose purpose is to sell without delivering a message, BTS get involved in their music, they write, compose and produce their albums, deliver a beautiful message, create their own styles and that's why the genre is bts. (In addition to them I can hear other genres like hip hop, trap, R&B)

Blog 3: My favorite piece of technology

Hi everyone!

My favorite piece of technology is my cell phone, I really love it because it allows me to be in touch with my friends, I can download apps to read, edit photos or listen to music, I love that it has so many functions and is so small and easy to manipulate. I have it since last year because the previous one was robbed, however, I loved so much the other cell phone that I bought exactly the same model but in different color.

What I use my cell phone for most is to write and read, listen to music and connect to twitter. These are the activities that I develop most often but the amount of time I use the cell phone varies from day to day, because if I have university homework I try to keep it away so it does not distract me, instead, if I have the day unoccupied I can spend hours browsing the internet.

Although there are other pieces of technology that can fulfill the same functions, the cell phone is much easier to manipulate, it is small, portable and more comfortable so I think that without my cell phone everything would be more complicated and slow, even though it is not an essential object in my life and I can live without this, it is a reality that makes my life much easier.

Blog 2: Why did I choose the architecture career?

Hi! today I'll tell you how I chose this career

I remember when I was little I wanted to study medicine although over the years I lost interest because growing up I thought I wanted to work on something related to art and painting. It was until the age of 13 that a teacher asked me if I was interested in architecture, I didn't understand at first but then she explained to me that it was because I had certain skills for the career like drawing, mathematics and a critical thought, that made me think a lot until I finally made up my mind and started to get information about the career.

When I applied to college I put first choice architecture, only in different universities, I also put pedagogy (although I had already chosen the first career) it was great to enter, I was very happy when they gave the results.

My experience at FAU has had good and bad times, the best thing was to meet my friends but there are also bad moments as in workshop where I have cried because I was not used to the denigrating treatments of teachers, but in general, I love to see everything I have progressed in the career and how I have developed better my skills and critical thinking.

I would love to write architectural books although I would also like to be a professor of professorship at the university.

Blog 1: My autobiography

Hi everyone

My name is Javiera Cornejo, I have 20 years and I was born on July 8, 1999 in the province of Melipilla (metropolitan region, Chile), my parents are Andrea Hernández and Freddy Cornejo (Rip) plus I have 3 sisters, one older and two minors, my family is the best in the world, despite the difficult moments we always remain strong, now we are 5 women in the house and it is great. My best friend is called Almond and she's like a sister to me, I love her very much.

I studied throughout elementary school at Pedro Marín Alemany school, until then in high school I moved to a school located in Melipilla called Manso de Velasco where I studied for 4 years. I am studying at the University of Chile, where I started studying architecture 3 years ago. In FAU I have met wonderful people.

In my spare time I like to write stories, read books, watch anime and Korean series. I love the boyband BTS  with my life, it is my favorite group and I started following their musical career 6 years ago. I have gone to all their concerts in Chile and I dream of being able to travel to South Korea.
